Abstract

Solutions of sulphur obtained by extracting gas purifying materials are freed from contaminating tarry or other organic matter by treatment with strong sulphuric acid containing nitric acid, or with chlorosulphonic acid, sulphur trioxide or fuming sulphuric acid. When using the last named, vigorous agitation is applied and the amount of acid used should not exceed 5 per cent by volume and should preferably be 1 per cent or less. Alternatively, the solution of crude sulphur may be added to the fuming sulphuric acid in batches, water being previously removed and normal or only slightly elevated temperatures being maintained; each batch of treated solution is removed before another is added. Sulphur dioxide and acid contained in the purified solution, may be removed by treatment with ammonium sulphite, alone or mixed with bisulphite, or by treatment with adsorption agents such as active carbon, oxide gels or adsorbent clays, or with calcium hydroxide containing up to 50 per cent of water. Examples of the various treatments are furnished.
