Abstract
Dinitroperylene quinone is produced by the nitration of perylene quinone or mononitroperylene quinone. According to the example, a mixture of perylene quinone with glacial acetic acid and concentrated nitric acid is heated to boiling; mononitroperylene quinone separates out at first but becomes further nitrated on continuing the boiling. The product dyes cotton violet from a brownish violet vat.
