Sulphonic acids are obtained by sulphonating dinaphthylsulphones ; the products are soluble in water, precipitate glue or gelatine from their solutions, and may be used as tanning-agents. Condensation of the sulphonic acids with formaldehyde yields products which also are tanning- agents. These condensation products may be produced in the fibre of hides or skins by treatment with formaldehyde before or after treatment with the sulphonic acids. In place of the dinaphthylsulphones, their derivatives containing hydroxyl groups in one naphthalene nucleus may be sulphonated, with or without condensation with formaldehyde. According to examples :- naphthalene is converted into sulphones by treatment with concentrated sulphuric acid, unaltered naphthalene is distilled off, and the product is sulphonated by concentrated sulphuric acid; # dinaphthylsulphone is sulphonated by concentrated sulphuric acid and the product is condensed with formaldehyde; naphthalene is condensed with 2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid and the oxydinaphthylsulphone resulting is sulphonated by concentrated sulphuric acid.
