Abstract

Condensation products are obtained by heating a toluene sulphonamide alkali compound with formaldehyde. In an example, sodium p-toluene sulphonamide is heated at 100 DEG C. in a reflux apparatus for 4 hours with twice its weight of a solution of formaldehyde of 40 per cent strength. The condensate is a yellow thick oily or semi-fluid mass which is practically completely soluble in cold ether or benzene or in dilute caustic soda, and which may be used for the production of textile assistants, e.g. these employed for imparting wool-like properties to cellulosic artificial fibres.
