Abstract
Oxidised rubber prepared as described in Specifications 417,912, [Group V], 426,613, [Group I], and 462,627, [Group V] and referred to as "Rubbone" is condensed with a phenol and an aldehyde in the presence of an alkaline aliphatic diamine having a chain length of not more than 3 carbon atoms to give a resinous syrup which may be used for impregnating paper used in the production of laminated boards. 300 gs. Rubbone, 100 ml. phenol hydrate and 25 ml. ethylene diamine were heated under reflux until the mixture gelled, whereupon 980 ml. phenol hydrate were added and heating continued until the Rubbone had completely dissolved. 1000 ml. 40 per cent formalin were then added and the mixture refluxed for 15 mins. and cooled, whereupon the lower resinous layer was separated, a dark brown liquid being obtained. The phenol may be replaced by cresols and the formalin by benzaldehyde or acetaldehyde. Specifications 507,995 and 538,992, [Group III], also are referred to.
