Abstract

An insulating composition comprises in solution in a volatile solvent a polyvinyl acetal resin, preferably polyvinyl formal, and a non-heat-hardenable resin made by condensing phenol or a methyl derivative thereof with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst. The ratio of polyvinyl to phenolic resin is preferably from 4 : 1 to 2 : 1 and the volatile solvent may be a mixture of cresol, methyl naphthalene and heavy naphtha. In examples, non-heat-hardenable resins are made from (a) 188 parts phenol, 75 parts 40 per cent formalin and 4.7 parts phosphoric acid catalyst, or (b) from 436 parts cresol, 162 parts 40 per cent formalin and 10.8 parts phosphoric acid catalyst by heating under reflux for two hours at 90 DEG C. and then heating at 110 DEG C without the reflux condenser until the mixture becomes clear. The preparation of a heat-hardenable resin from 188 parts phenol, 300 parts 40 percent formalin and 6 parts 0.880 ammonia catalyst is also described.
