Abstract
In making a novolak resin by condensing a molar excess of phenolic compounds containing phenol, meta-cresol or meta-ethyl phenol with formaldehyde, the reaction is effected at a pH of 4 to 7 in the presence of the oxide or hydroxide of divalent cadmium as condensation catalyst. Other phenols may be used in conjunction with at least one of the aforementioned phenols, e.g. commercial xylenols. The preferred starting material is pure phenol or an isomeric mixture of cresols containing m-cresol. The molar ratio of phenols to formaldehyde is preferably from 1.8:1 to 2.5:1. The reaction is effected by mixing the phenol(s) and formaldehyde (as formalin or paraformaldehyde), adding the catalyst thereto and heating gently until reaction occurs, volatile compounds being allowed to distif off until the temperature reaches 150 DEG to 160 DEG C. When the desired degree of condensation has been reached, residual volatile compounds, e.g. unreacted phenols, may then be removed either by vacuum distillation or by addition of further formaldehyde with further heating. Examples are given.
