Abstract

524,125. Ointments. BEUTNER, R. Jan. 23, 1939, No. 2296. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group IV] A composition suitable for use as a drying ointment is prepared by forming in a solution of an alcohol-soluble phenol-aldehyde or a phenolketone resin a gel of an alcohol-insoluble ureaaldehyde or urea ketone resin ; alternatively, in a solution of a urea-aldehyde or ketone resin in the water soluble state there is formed a gel of an alcohol insoluble phenol aldehyde. or ketone resin. The first-mentioned composition may be prepared by mixing a phenol with considerable excess of formaldehyde and an alkaline condensing agent, heating for ¢ to 1 hour, evaporating most of the water, adding sufficient urea or thiourea to combine with the excess formaldehyde and heating, but not sufficiently to produce the gel condition ; the alkaline condensing agent may be neutralized or washed out and alcohol or other solvent is added whereafter on standing the urea-aldehyde compound will precipitate and transform the alcohol solution into a gel. Or the urea may be first condensed with excess aldehyde and the phenol then added. Emulsifying agents may be added to the ointments and stabilizing agents, e.g. sodium salicylate or sodium benzoate. In producing a composition of the alternative type in which insoluble phenol resin is suspended in soluble urea-resin, phenol, excess of formaldehyde and soda are heated under reflux, 90 per cent of the water of the formaldehyde is distilled off, urea is added to combine with the formaldehyde and after heating the alkali is neutralized with an acid which may be in excess ; the mass is heated to 100‹C. and the hot mass is mixed with aqueous alcohol. The solution formed sets to a jelly on cooling.
