Casein.-Masses of hardened casein are obtained by mixing and pressing casein with formaldehyde in the cold and in the presence of an alcohol. The formaldehyde may be used as its bisulphite. compound, as a 40 per cent aqueous solution, or as trioxymethylene, and the alcohol may be a primary alcohol such as ethyl alcohol; the cold-pressing of the mixture may be followed by hot-pressing. The mixture may contain one or more swelling agents such as alkalies, carbonates, borates, phosphates, and alkali fluorides, and pigments or soluble dyes may be added also. In an example, casein is mixed in the cold with formalin, ethyl alcohol, and caustic soda, and the mixture is pressed first in the cold and then at 95-100‹ C.
