Abstract
Resins are prepared by condensing resorcinol with a molar proportion of 0.53 to 0.74 of formaldehyde or an equivalent proportion of a polymer thereof to give a stable syrup, which is then hardened to a gel and ultimately to a resin by addition of further formaldehyde or polymer, both stages being carried out under substantially neutral conditions, i.e. at a pH value of 6.5-7.5. The acidity of the resorcinol and, if any, of the formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde employed may be neutralized with caustic soda, and the syrup obtained in the first stage may have a little alcohol added thereto as stabilizer. In examples: (1) a gap-filling glue is obtained by dissolving resorcinol in 9/8 N caustic soda solution, and allowing to react with paraformaldehyde, a hardening composition comprising wood flour and paraformaldehyde being mixed in before use; and (2) a solution used for impregnation of paper is obtained by dissolving resorcinol in water, neutralizing with caustic soda and adding paraformaldehyde, with addition of formalin immediately before use.
