Abstract

An adhesive comprises a urea-aldehyde resin and furfuryl alcohol in proportions such that the molar ratio of alcohol to urea is less than 1 : 1 and the weight ratio of alcohol to the sum of the weights of urea and aldehyde is less than .8 : 1. The resin and alcohol may be heated together. The preferred aldehyde is formaldehyde in molar proportion of 1 : 1 to 2 : 1 to the urea, but paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde, crotonaldehyde and benzaldehyde are also specified. A preferred amount of furfuryl alcohol is .05 to .5, preferably .4, parts by weight calculated as above. Fillers, e.g. wood flour, may be added, and if acidic may be neutralized, e.g. with sodium hydroxide or triethanolamine. The adhesive may be hardened by acid or acid-yielding compounds, e.g. ammonium chloride and ferric chloride, if desired in the presence of a buffer salt, e.g. tricalcium phosphate. The products may be used as adhesives for plywood, veneers and wall-paper, for impregnating textiles, and in manufacturing cardboard containers, adhesive tape, and moulding, casting and coating compositions.
