Abstract
Aqueous emulsions of asphalt, pitch, tar, resin, wax, or mineral or other oils, stabilized with alkali caseinate, are treated with a solution of acid, for example a weak acid such as orthophosphoric acid or boric acid, to reduce the alkalinity of the caseinate and prevent its deterioration. The alkali caseinate may be added as such, or, where the emulsion is alkaline in reaction, as finely divided casein. Emulsions of mineral or other oils treated as above may be employed as medicines or as plant sprays. In an example, a bituminous emulsion prepared with the sole aid of an aqueous alkaline solution as described in Specification 226,032 or 254,012, [both in Class 81 (i), Disinfecting &c.], has stirred into it 1 per cent of powdered casein; orthophosphoric acid or boric acid is then added to bring the pH to approximately 8,5, followed by the addition of a preservative such as formaldehyde, phenol, or sodium o-phenol phenate.
