Abstract

501,388. Urea-formaldehyde condensation products. SAUNDERS, S. L. M., and COVENEY, L. W. April 26, 1938, No. 12493. Addition to 484,200. [Class 2 (iii)] Consists in employing as starting-material a product of urea and /or thiourea and /or derivatives thereof with formaldehyde which has been condensed beyond the point of water solubility but which is still soluble or solubilizable in the monohydric alcoholic solvent.. In an example, moist dimethylolurea is melted and heated to 95‹ C., with addition of a small amount of phthalic acid, for half an hour or until it gels, the gel is cooled and powdered and refluxed with n-butyl alcohol and paraformaldehyde; after dissolution the liquid is distilled to remove water and alcohol, yielding a product soluble in xylol.
