Abstract

537,813. Urea-aldehyde condensation products. BROWN CO. July 25, 1939, No. 21595. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Urea-formaldehyde polymer compositions are prepared by heating an aqueous urea-formaldehyde composition containing a condensing agent consisting of glue or like albuminous or proteinous substance, until the viscosity of the composition is increasing rapidly and then rapidly arresting the polymerization so that the composition is stabilized short of the gelled state. Specified condensing agents are glue and casein. The urea, formaldehyde and condensing agent may be heated together, or the urea with the condensing agent may be separately heated and added gradually to a hot formaldehyde solution. Arrest of the polymerization may be effected by rapid cooling, or preferably by the addition of an organic water-miscible liquid whose boiling point is below that of the polymerization temperature, e.g. alcohol or acetone, below the surface of the composition. The molar ratio of formaldehyde to urea is preferably at least about 2 : 1 and not more than 3: 1. Other aldehydes, e.g. acetaldehyde may be employed in place of formaldehyde and thiourea or substituted ureas may be employed in place of urea. Specification 523,185 is referred to. The product is applied to paper-making stock in the beater and is affixed to the stock by alum or other acidic agent giving, upon drying and heat treatment, a paper of enhanced wet strength.
