Abstract
302,098. Hole, E. S. June 20, 1927. Phenol-formaldehyde condensation products.- A water soluble condensation product is made by boiling together phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of a small quantity of alkaline condensing agent such as alkali hydroxide until the product attains any desired viscosity or approximation to resinification, adding a quantity of cold or heated water, cooling, and further adding water containing a chromic acid salt. The preferred chromic acid salt and the procedure for securing water solubility may be in accordance with the methods set out in Specification 278,460. Thus in order to retain or increase water solubility, alcohol, or ammonium hydroxide or both may be added to the boiling mixture. The solution may be used as a varnish, with or without the addition of pigments, dyes, fillers, &c., or may be used to impregnate materials such as paper, paper pulp, wood flour, cellulose, &c. Various materials such as casein, glue, aluminium powder may be added to the mixture.
