Abstract

507,013. Resinous condensation products. BAKELITE, Ltd. Dec. 7, 1937, No. 33899. Convention date, Dec. 9, 1936. [Class 2 (iii)] Resins are produced by reacting a phenol with a polyvinyl compound and then reacting the product with an aldehyde. There are specified : phenols-phenol, resorcinol ; polyvinyl compounds-polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate-acetaldehyde reaction product ; aldehydes-formaldehyde as such or as paraformaldehyde or hexamethylenetetramine. The products may be dissolved in organic solvents to form coating compositions and adhesives; and may be used in laminated bodies, e.g. safety glass. In examples : (1) phenol and polyvinyl acetate are refluxed; then the product condensed with paraformaldehyde to a rubbery material ; (2) phenol, resorcinol, and-polyvinyl acetate are refluxed, then the product condensed with paraformaldehyde, the resin being dissolved in alcohol, preferably containing ethylenediamine or caustic soda, and used as an adhesive for wood ; (3) phenol and polyvinyl acetate are heated, then the product condensed with paraformaldehyde, the resin being dissolved in ethanol and toluene, and tricresyl phosphate added, to form a coating composition. Specification 478,703 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use of vinyl compounds in general. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
