559,684. Phenol aldehyde resins. BAKELITE, Ltd, May 12, 1942, No. 6444. Convention date, May 16, 1941. [Class 2 (iii)] An adhesive composition suitable as a binder for laminated materials comprises a phenolic resin, prepared by the condensation of an alkyl substituted phenol and an aldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst, and an alkyl ester of abietic acid as plasticizer. Phenols specified include phenol, cresols and xylenols. Methyl abietate is preferably used as plasticizer and may be present up to 20 per cent. of the composition, 6,000 gs. cresol, 4,680 gs. 37 per cent. formaldehyde and 210 gs. ammonia are refluxed for 70 minutes at 100‹C.; the product is dehydrated under vacuum, dissolved in alcohol and mixed with methyl abietate under reflux. Specifications 343,572, and 349,599, [Group III], and U.S.A. Specification 2,151,975 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 343,572.
