Abstract

545,157. Synthetic resin compositions. FORESTAL LAND TIMBER & RAILWAYS CO., Ltd., and ROTTSIEPER, E. H. W. Nov. 11, 1940, No. 16343. [Class 2 (iii)] Refers to Specification 539,581 and consists in the incorporation with the tannin-containing fibrous material and aldehyde of a resinforming component capable of forming with the aldehyde a water-resistant resinous binder. The fibrous material is reduced to a fine powder and mixed with the aldehyde and resin-forming component ; part of the aldehyde may be preliminarily condensed with the resin-forming component by heating to a temperature, e.g. 60-70‹C., insufficient to cause condensation of the tannin and aldehyde. Specified resinforming components are phenol, aniline, urea, cyclohexanone, methyl cyclohexanone, methyl cyclohexanol, acetophenone, benzophenone, propriophenone, 4-hydroxy-benzophenone, 4- amino-benzophenone and 4-hydroxy-propriophenone. Examples are given of the preparation of moulding powders from 'quebracho wood powder, formaldehyde and various resinforming components and include other additions, e.g. plasticizers, pigments, dyes &c.
