Abstract

524,681. Urea-formaldehyde condensation products. RIPPER, K. Nov. 5, 1938, No. 32133. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] A material suitable for use as a textile finish, adhesive, for the production of moulding powders or as a lacquer base, is obtained by allowing urea, thiourea or a mixture thereof. casein and formaldehyde to react at room temperature e.g. 15-25‹C. until the reaction mixture liquefies in the cold or immediately upon warming e.g. to 50-60‹C. Examples are given, employing rennet-casein or acid casein, aqueous formaldehyde and weakly acid conditions. The products may be incorporated with cotton linters or cellulose for the production of moulding powders, used for crease-proofing textiles, or, mixed with acid accelerators, for glueing plywood. Casein may be replaced by zein or by soya casein of which the urease has been removed or rendered innocuous. Polymers of formaldehyde may be employed and additions of alkyd or phenol-aldehyde resins may be made. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to proteins, in general, and also to blood albumen, in particular. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
