Abstract

Plies, one of which is wood, are united by applying to one of the surfaces a heat-coagulable water-dispersible protein such as blood, egg-albumen and lactalbumen in discrete particle form, for example as a dry powder, checking penetration even in presence of moisture and applying pressure and heat. Moisture may be supplied before, during or after the application of the dry adhesive. Penetration of the adhesive is checked either by heat, by using temperatures up to about 140 DEG F. or by incorporating with the water-dispersible protein penetration-checking agents such as alkaline-earth compounds, for example lime, or proteins insoluble in water, for example casein or oleaginous seed flours from soya beans or cottonseed. Insolubilizing (coagulating) agents such as bichromates, chromates, alums, for example chrome alum, tannicacid, gallic acid, formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde and hexamethylenetetramine may be added. Pressures from 40 to about 300 pounds per square inch and temperatures of 160 DEG F. or higher may be used. The compound sheet material may comprise, in addition to wood, material such as fabric, paper, pulp-board and plaster-board. Specification 356,137 is referred to.
