507,995. Synthetic resinous products. R.P.R. ASSOCIATION, REDFARN, C. A., and SCHIDROWITZ, P. Sept. 22, 1937, No. 25689. [Class 2 (iii)] A synthetic resinous product is obtained by treating rubber simultaneously with maleic anhydride and a phenol at elevated temperature and then further condensing the rubber-maleic anhydride-phenol product with an aldehyde. The first stage may be accelerated by the presence of oxygen or air and catalysts, e.g. sulphuric or oxalic acids may be employed ; the second stage may be carried out in acid or alkaline medium. Moulding compositions are obtained by incorporating fillers, mould lubricants, colouring substances and hardening agents with the resin by hot milling. In examples rubber, maleic anhydride and phenolic substances, in varying proportions are heated under reflux with a slow stream of oxygen or air until the rubber is completely dispersed after which formaldehyde is added and the mixture further refluxed until water separates out and then vacuum distilled to yield the resin. The resin is cold mixed with wood flour, hexamethylene tetramine, colouring material, lime and stearic acid, hot milled, disintegrated and moulded. Rubber vulcanizing ingredients may be added to the moulding composition. Specifications 368,902, [Group V], and 507,996 are referred to.
