Abstract

1,179,284. Phenolic resins; compositions. FORDATH Ltd. 16 April, 1968 [2 May, 1967], No. 20149/67. Heading C3R. Sand is coated with a composition comprising a novolak and 20-50% of a resole prepared in the presence of alcoholic alkali. The resole and novolak may be prepared from phenol and formaldehyde. The novolak may be ortho, paralinked or para, para-linked. For the resole 1À1- 3-5 moles of aldehyde may be used per mole of phenol. The alcohol may be MeOH or EtOH and the alkali NaOH or NaOEt. The phenol, aldehyde and alcohol may be heated in a jacketed kettle and the alkali added slowly before the mixture is refluxed. The coated sand may also include a wax and up to 5% of hexa-methylene tetramine as curing agent.
