Abstract

Synthetic resins are prepared by condensing a phenol such as phenol, o-, m- and p-cresol, xylenols, diphenylolpropane or other polynuclear phenols containing not more than one phenolic hydroxyl group to a nucleus with a halogenated ketone such as chloracetone or monochlormethyl-ethylketone and then reacting the product with formaldehyde or a substance yielding formaldehyde such as hexamethylenetetramine. An acid catalyst such as hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid or zinc chloride may be used. The resins are soluble in solvents such as acetone, alcohol, acetic acid and dilute caustic soda and they are compatible with cellulose derivatives such as cellulose acetate and natural or synthetic resins such as polyvinyl compounds. Compositions containing the resins may also contain plasticizers such as tricresyl, triphenyl and alkyl phosphates, diethyl and dibutyltartrates and di- and triacetins, colouring materials such as bone-black, iron oxide and manganese dioxide and fillers such as china clay, microasbestos, bentonite, wood flour, cotton flock, mica and gypsum. In examples: (1) a phenol-chloracetone resin is heated with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric or phosphoric acid; or (2) o-cresol is condensed with chloracetone in the presence of hydrochloric acid and the product heated with formaldehyde to give a resin. In further examples lacquers or plastic compositions are prepared containing the resin, cellulose acetate or polyvinyl acetate, diethylphthalate, tricocsyl phosphate, dibutyltartrate or triacetin, acetone, benzene or alcohol, ethyl lactate, china clay, microasbestos or bentonite.
