Abstract
517,684. Synthetic resins. I.G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Aug. 3, 1938, No. 23001. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] An alpha,#- unsaturated aldehyde is heated in about equimolecular proportions with maleic anhydride, maleic acid, fumaric acid, or an alkyl substitution product thereof, in the absence of polymerization catalysts, to form a resinous condensation product soluble in caustic alkali, alkalimetal carbonate, 'and sodium; borate, and suitable as a substitute for shellac. The solubility can be reduced by esterifying with mononydric or polyhydric alcohols or phenols. In examples,crotonaldehyde or alpha-ethyl-#-propyl acrolein is heated under reflux with maleic anhydride, and water, unchanged starting materials and volatile condensation products are removed by vacuum distillation.
