Abstract

Thermoplastic resins suitable for the production of threads are produced by heating substantially equimolecular proportions of epichlorhydrin and m- or p-hydroxy benzoic acid together with a quantity of 1 to 1.1 mols. caustic alkali per mol. of monohydroxy benzoic acid. The three reactants may be heated under reflux in presence of a diluent, e.g. alcohol or aqueous alcohol, and if desired, heated after removal of diluent under reduced pressure and at higher temperature. Or the acid and epichlorhydrin may be condensed together and the product reacted with the alkali. The hydroxy acid may be mixed with up to 95 per cent of a diphenol as defined in Specification 652,024, all the materials being reacted together or the epichlorhydrin being first condensed with the acid or the diphenol and then with the other. Or a bis-glycidyl aromatic ether may be formed and condensed in presence of the alkali with the hydroxy acid. In place of epichlorhydrin a mixture of a - or b -glycerol dichlorhydrin with alkali may be used. In the examples: (1) equimolecular proportions of p-hydroxy benzoic acid, epichlorhydrin and caustic soda were heated in aqueous alcohol, cooled, and the oily layer heated with boiling water to yield a solid mass; (2) the acid and epichlorhydrin are pre-condensed and then heated in aqueous alcohol with the alkali; (3) is similar to (1), the initial heating being followed by removal of the diluents and heating under reduced pressure; example (4) uses a mixture of hydroquinone with p-hydroxy benzoic acid; and example (5) a mixture of 4,41-dihydroxy diphenyl with p-hydroxybenzoic acid.
