Abstract
Refers to multi-stage processes in which, in the final stage, a reaction mixture composed of 1 mol. of phenol to 2,2-3 mols. of formaldehyde is heated in so strongly alkaline a solution that the condensation product remains in solution, which solution is then neutralized or weakly over-acidulated and the entire batch or the separated resin distilled and hardened, and consists in conducting at least one pre-final stage with 1 mol. of phenol to about 1 to not more than 2 mols. of formaldehyde, also under such strongly alkaline conditions that the resin does not separate. In examples: (1) 100 grams of crystallized carbolic acid is heated under reflux for 20 minutes with 100 grams of 30 per cent formaldehyde and 21 grams of double normal caustic soda; 195 grams of 30 per cent formaldehyde are then added and heating continued for 40 minutes after which there are added 5 grams of phthalic acid dissolved in 20 grams of glycerine and the resin is isolated by distillation under vacuum; (2) 100 grams of crystallized carbolic acid are heated under reflux for 10 minutes with 310 grams of 30 per cent formaldehyde and 45 grams of double normal caustic potash, 50 grams of carbolic acid are added and heating continued for 15 minutes, then 85 grams of 30 per cent formaldehyde are added and heating continued for a further 15 minutes after which 65 c.cs. of double normal lactic acid are added followed by vacuum distillation. Other phenols and aldehydes or their polymers may be employed; also other bases, e.g. strong organic bases. Specifications 267,901 and 290,963, [both in Class 2 (iii)], are referred to.
