535,408. Lacquers ; melamine-formaldehyde condensation products. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Dec. 15, 1939, No. 32339. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Lacquers containing melamine-formaldehyde condensation products are prepared by reacting, by heating, melamine with aqueous formaldehyde, stopping the reaction after the formation of a methylol melamine and while the solution remains essentially fluid, spray-drying the solution, and boiling the solid reactive intermediate thus obtained in an acidified alcohol, at a pH less than 6 and preferably of a pH of 3 to 4.5, until substantially all the water of reaction is removed. When the melamine is heated with formaldehyde in the molecular ratio of 1 : 6 and at a pH of less than 6, hexamethylol-melamine is formed, and when the molecular ratio is from 1 : 3 to 1:5, and the pH between 8 and 9, the resulting lacquers have improved compatibility with alkyd resins.
