Abstract

521,380. Urea-formaldehyde resins. BECK, KOLLER & CO. (ENGLAND), Ltd. (Hovey, A. G., Hodgins, T. S., and Bevan, E. A.). Nov. 17, 1938, No. 33474. [Class 2 (iii)] Dimethylolurea, or urea and at least 2 mols per mol of aqueous formaldehyde, and an alcohol containing not more than eight carbon atoms are boiled together at a pH of 5.5-6.5 and dehydrated under reduced pressure to give a resin having a nitrogen content between those of the mono- and di-etherification products of dimethylolurea. Dimethylolurea may be mixed with at least 2 mols of the alcohol, preferably one containing between 3 and 8 carbon atoms, the pH adjusted by phosphoric acid, the solution boiled until clear, and the mixture dehydrated under a vacuum of 100-200 mins. of mercury at 60-70‹C. Alcohols specified are methyl, ethyl, n- and iso-propyl, n-, sec- and tert-butyl, n- and sec-amyl, and n-octyl alcohols ; ethyleneglycol, glycerol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, and mannitol; " B 23 alcohol (containsing 2 : 4-dimethyl-pentanol-1 and 2 : 4-dimethylhexanol-3) and " B 24 alcohol (containing 4-methyl-hexanol-1, 2 4-dimethyl-hexanol-1, and 4-methyl-heptanol-1). The products are solids soluble in alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons, and to some extent in straight-chain hydrocarbons and oils, and may be used in coating compositions, e.g., with alkyd resins, castor oil, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide. Specification 502,308 is referred to.
