Abstract

1,130,481. Synthetic resins. CHEMOLIMPEX MAGYAR VEGYIARU KULKERESKEDELMI VALLALAT. 28 Jan., 1966[29 Jan., 1965], No. 3999/66. Headings C3B and C3R. Etherified resins suitable for lacquers are prepared by condensing phenol or cresol or 4,4-dihydroxydiphenylpropane and/or melamine or urea with a soln. of substantially pure formaldehyde in the presence of a primary, secondary or tertiary aliphatic alcohol and from 0À2 to 1À6 moles of water per mole or phenol, cresol, 4,4-dihydroxydiphenylpropane, urea or melamine, and removing the water formed during condensation. A polyester resin having free hydroxyl groups may be added to the reaction mixture (e.g. polyethyleneglycol adipate). The formaldehyde soln. may be prepared by heating an alcoholic suspension of paraformaldehyde and calcium hydroxide at 80-110‹ C. to depolymerize the paraformaldehyde, followed by filtering. Suitable alcohols are methanol, ethanol, the propanols, entanols and amyl alcohols. The resins formed are compatible with alkyd resins and epoxy resins in the preparation of lacquers.
