Abstract

1,268,481. Etherified amino-triazine/aldehyde resins. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 24 Feb., 1969 [27 Feb., 1968], No. 9299/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] An aminotriazine derivative containing free carboxyl groups and unsaturated ether groups is obtained by etherifying an amino-triazine/aldehyde condensate or transetherifying an intermediate ether thereof, firstly with an alcohol containing an allyl or methallyl group, and then with a hydroxy carboxylic acid, or simultaneously with these reagents, to give a product containing at least two allyl or methallyl ether groups per triazine ring and sufficient free carboxyl groups to be water-dilutable. Suitable starting materials include: melamine, benzoguanamine, acetoguanamine, ammeline and 6- chloro-2 : 4-diamino-1 : 3 : 5-triazine; formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, and furfural; allyl and methallyl alcohols, glycerol α- allyl ether, glycerol diallyl ether, dipentaerythritol tetra-allyl ether, trimethylolpropane diallyl ether and sorbitol tetra-allyl ether; and ricinoleic, 12-hydroxystearic, 9 : 10-dihydroxystearic, dimethylolpropionic, gallic and glycollic acids. There are preferably 2-5 allyl or methallyl ether groups and 0À9-2 hydroxy acid residues per triazine ring. In examples ricinoleic acid is heated with (Example 1) the product from hexakis-methoxymethyl-melamine and allyl alcohol or (Example 2) the product from melamine, paraformaldehyde and allyl alcohol or (Example 3) a mixture of butoxymethyl melamine and glycerol allyl ether; in Example 4 an ester from trimethylolpropionic acid and tall oil fatty acids is heated with a product from hexamethylol melamine and allyl alcohol.
