Abstract
Methylol aminotriazines etherified with alcohols containing at least two hydroxyl groups are used in admixture with unmodified aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensates to impregnate material for making laminated bodies, particularly curved ones such as trays or bowls. Etherified condensates may be produced as follows:- (a) Ethylene glycol, melamine, peraformaldehyde and borax are heated to 102 DEG C. and kept at that temperature for about 1 hour. The cooled syrup is diluted with water and filtered. (b) Is similar using acetoguanamine in place of melamine. (c) Is similar using benzoguanamine in place of melamine, and alcohol instead of water as a diluent. Propane-1,2-diol; butane-1,4-diol; glycerol; trimethylolpropane; pentaerythritol and sorbitol are listed alternatives to ethylene glycol. An example is given of a laminate prepared from sheets of paper impregnated with a 52% aqueous solution of a mixture of 100 parts of melamineformaldehyde condensate and 15 parts of etherified aminotriazine-formaldehyde condensate, together with sheets of paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resin.
