Abstract

Articles of glass, ceramic, or other fragile non-porous materials are reinforced by completely coating them with a material containing a synthetic resin obtained by the condensation of two substances. Resins specified are phenol-aldehyde, diphenylol-propane-aldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, and toluene sulphonamide-formaldehyde resins. Optional additions are: cellulose derivatives such as the nitrate, acetate, formate, propionate, or butyrate, or the methyl, ethyl, benzyl, or other ethers; solvents such as acetone, benzene, methylene chloride, ethylene dichloride, ethyl acetate, methyl acetate, chloroform, ethyl lactate, or diacetone alcohol; plasticizers such as camphor, diethyl tartrate, dibutyl tartrate, triacetin, diethyl phthalate, or diphenyl propane and natural resins; pigments, dyes, or other effect materials. The protective coating may be applied in one or more stages in the form of a solution, a plastic mass, or a powder. Suitable solutions are described in Specifications 347,646 and 347,647, [both in Group VIII.]. Reinforced glass may be made by pressing a sheet of glass between sheets of material containing a synthetic resin; or two or more sheets of glass having interposed layers of a cellulose derivative reinforcing material may have sheets of synthetic resin material applied to their exposed surfaces.ALSO:Articles of glass, ceramic, or other fragile nonporous materials are reinforced by completely coating them with a material containing a synthetic resin obtained by the condensation of two substances. Resins specified are phenol-aldehyde, diphenylol-propane-aldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, and toluene sulphonamide formaldehyde resins. Optional additions are cellulose derivatives such as the nitrates, acetate, formate, propionate, or butyrate, or the methyl, ethyl, benzyl, or other ethers, solvents such as acetone, benzene, methylene chloride, ethylene dichloride, ethyl acetate, methyl acetate, chloroform, ethyl lactate, or diacetone alcohol, plasticizers such as camphor, diethyl tartrate, dibutyl tartrate, triacetin, diethyl phthalate, or diphenyl propane and natural resins, pigments, dyes, or other effect materials. The protective coating may be applied in one or more stages in the form of a plastic mass.
