Abstract

A solution containing available formaldehyde and very little water is obtained by a process comprising mixing aqueous formaldehyde vapour containing not more than 15 per cent by weight of water with the vapour of a water-miscible normally liquid aliphatic mono- or poly-hydric alcohol, subjecting the mixture to partial condensation to condense water and alcohol from the mixture and separately condensing or absorbing the remaining vapours in the same or another such alcohol. The formaldehyde is probably present in the solution mainly in the form of hemiacetals and polyoxymethylene hemiacetals of the formul RO.CH2OH and R(OCH2)2-OH, where R is the organic radical of the hydroxy compound. In the examples aqueous formaldehyde vapours containing not more than 15 per cent by weight of water are treated in accordance with the process with (a) methanol and (b) butanol.
