Abstract

Formic acid is removed from an aqueous solution of formaldehyde also containing an alcohol having an atmospheric boiling point of at least 95 DEG C., said alcohol being free from any substituent group other than a hydroxyl group, that is reactive with formaldehyde under the conditions of the process and on the formal of the alcohol, by contacting the solution with an alkaline earth oxide or hydroxide and filtering the solution. The formaldehyde may be recovered by heating the solution thus obtained. The amount of water in the starting material may be 5 to 15% by weight of the total; the formaldehyde may be 15 to 40% by weight, the remainder being alcohol, such a solution being optionally obtained by mixing the constituent components. The purified formaldehyde may be recovered from the solution after alkaline earth oxide/hydroxide addition and filtration, by distilling off water and pyrolyzing the hemiformal. Primary or secondary aliphatic or cycloaliphatic C5 to C10 alcohols of atmospheric boiling point at least 120 DEG C. are preferred, cyclohexanal being especially suitable and described in the examples. The contact between the alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide may be effected by adding the solid or a slurry thereof to the solution or by passage of the solution through a static bed of alkaline earth metal hydroxide. U.S.A. Specification 2,848,500 is referred to.
