Abstract

Aldehydes are removed from ethylene oxide by contacting liquid ethylene oxide at -10 DEG to +10 DEG C. with up to 100% of stoichiometric requirements, in accordance with the equations below, of an alkali metal borohydride, neutralising with an acid and filtering. Sodium or potassium borohydride may be used in aqueous alkaline solution or solution or dispersion in inert liquids, e.g. methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, ethylene or propylene glycol. The reactions are as follows. <FORM:0934666/IV(a)/1> The acids used for neutralising are preferably organic and soluble in ethylene oxide, formic, acetic and propionic being exemplified. The filtrate may be distilled. Specification 891,823 is referred to.
