Abstract
Triacetone dialcohol is prepared along with diacetone alcohol by mixing acetone with an alkali metal hydroxide in solution in a C1-4 alkanol at -30 DEG to +15 DEG C. Preferably 0.002 to 0.02 grams of alkali metal hydroxide are used per 100 ml. of acetone. The temperature preferably does not exceed 0 DEG C. Acetone containing up to 0.5% by volume of water may be used. The triacetone dialcohol may be recovered by, for example, neutralizing the alkali with acid, distilling the acetone at atmospheric pressure, filtering off the salt formed in the neutralization, and then removing diacetone alcohol at reduced pressure leaving the triacetone dialcohol as the residue.
