Abstract

The invention comprises oestra-1,3,5(10)-triene-17b -ol-3-yl-a -oxyisobutryric acid of the formula <FORM:0913059/IV (b)/1> and the preparation thereof by refluxing a solution of oestradiol-17b in a mixture of acetone and chloroform containing sodium hydroxide for 6 to 10 hours, removing the solvent by distillation, dissolving the residue in water, acidifying the aqueous solution to a pH of about 4 with a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid, dissolving the precipitate formed in a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution, acidifying the resulting alkaline solution to a pH below 4.5 with a mineral acid, and collecting the precipitate of the desired product. In the above process the aqueous solution and/or the alkaline solution may be extracted with ether before the acidification step.
