Abstract

The invention comprises alkyl substituted thioctic acids of the general formula: <FORM:0796894/IV (b)/1> (wherein R is an alkyl radical of 1-4 carbon atoms), and the preparation thereof by treating a dithiol aliphatic acid of the formula: <FORM:0796894/IV (b)/2> with oxygen, advantageously at 0-100 DEG C. in an aqueous alkaline medium which may subsequently be acidified. The acids are useful as antagonists to thioctic acid, and are capable of forming esters, reference being made to the methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl esters. In an example, 6 : 8-dithiolnonanoic acid is dissolved in aqueous sodium carbonate solution, ferric chloride is added, oxygen is bubbled through, and the solution is finally acidified and 6 : 8-dithiononanoic acid extracted with ether. 6 : 8-Dithioldecanoic acid is also specified as a starting material. Starting material. 6 : 8-Dithiolnonanoic acid is prepared by refluxing ethyl 8-acetylthio-6-hydroxynonanoate with aqueous caustic soda, acidifying and extracting with ether, evaporating the solvent, refluxing the residue with thiourea and dilute hydriodic acid, refluxing the resulting solution with caustic soda, and acidifying with hydrochloric acid.
