Abstract

The invention comprises Bovogenin A represented by the empirical formula C24H32O5 and having a m.p. of 247-262 DEG C. and a specific rotation [a ]D22=0 DEG \sB4 DEG (C=0.550 in methanol), Bovogenol A represented by an empirical formula C24H34O5 and having a m.p. of 260-270 DEG C. and a specific rotation [a ]D2-=15.4 DEG \sB4 DEG (C=0.585 in methanol), Bovosidal A i.e. 3b -[1 - thevetoxy] - 14b - hydroxy - 19 - oxo - 5a -bufadienolide having a m.p. of 220 DEG to 238 DEG C. and a specific rotation [a ]D22= - 86.6 DEG \sB2 DEG (C=1.046 in methanol) and Bovosidal D represented by the empirical formula C31H46O10 and having a m.p. 268-286 DEG C. and a specific rotation [a ]D23= - 89 DEG \sB2 DEG (C=0.971 in methanol and the process of recovering Bovogenin A from the plant Bowica volubilis Harvey by preparing a water-containing extract thereof, treating the obtained extract with lead hydroxide, preparing an organic solvent extract from the solution after separation of the precipitate and isolating the cardio-active compound in a crystalline form from the obtained extract. After removal of the tannic acids &c. from the initial extract by means of lead hydroxide the solution is extracted with chloroform/ethanol mixture, the residue treated with water, the aqueous extract treated with ether and the cardio-active substance crystallized from the ethereal extract. Alternatively the ethereal extract is purified by chromatography. Bovosidal A, Bovosidal D and Bovogenol A are obtained by reducing Bovoside A, Bovoside D or Bogovenin A, e.g. with sodium boron hydride, lithium boron hydride, in a solvent. Bovoside A, Bovoside D and Bovogenin A are stabilized against autooxidation an antioxidant, e.g. n-propyl gallate, ethyl gallate, gallic acid, nordihydroguairetic acid, dihydroguairetic acid, guairetic acid, d, l-tocopherol, sodium d, l-a -tocopherol phosphate, caffeic acid or ascorbic acid palmitate. Examples describe the various aspects of the invention.
