Abstract

Calcium or ammonium salts of a -hydroxy-g -methylthiobutyric acid are prepared from an aqueous solution of the acid by extracting the acid with an ether with a boiling point above ethyl ether e.g. isopropyl, n-propyl, or butyl ethers, and adding calcium hydroxide or carbonate, or gaseous ammonia respectively, in amounts equivalent to the acid. The process may be continuous and an example describes the preparation of the acid by saponification of methyl thiopropionaldehyde cyanhydrin with dilute sulphuric acid and its extraction with isopropyl ether, and the formation of the salts therefrom.
