Abstract
Optically active glutamic acid is prepared from a mixture of, (I) optically active and racemic glutamic acid; (II) soluble optically active and racemic alkali metal or ammonium glutamates; and (III) inorganic acid salts of optically active or racemic glutamic acid by treating the mixture with a substantially equivalent amount of an acid or alkali in (i) calculated on the racemic glutamic acid, in (ii) with an acid calculated on the optically active glutamate, and in (iii) with an alkali, calculated on the optically active salt, to form a water and/or alcohol soluble racemic salt and optically active glutamic acid. The mixture is adjusted with water and/or alcohol to substantially saturate the mixture with respect to the racemic salt and to form a solid phase containing the optically active acid and a liquid phase containing the racemic salt in equilibrium and separating the solid and liquid phases. The acids used may be hydrochloric, sulphuric and trichloracetic acids or an acidic cation-exchange resin, and the alkalis, sodium, potassium and ammonium hydroxides, diethylamine or an ion-exchange resin in (OH) form. The inorganic acid soluble salt of glutamic acid may be the glutamic acid hydrochloride or sulphate.
