Abstract

Butene triol monoethers and derivatives thereof are made by reacting a substantially anhydrous aliphatic alcohol with but-2-yn-1.4-diol in presence of mercuric sulphate and sulphuric acid. The product may be hydrogenated to give the butane-triol monoether, and either the butene or butane compound may be dehydrated to give an alkoxy furane. Alcohols specified are methanol, ethanol and propanol. Examples describe the reaction using ethanol, the preparation of a derivative from the 2-ethoxy-but-2-en-1.4-diol and p-nitrophenyl-hydrazine, and the hydrogenation of 2-ethoxybut-2-en-1.4-diol to the corresponding butane compound, using a Raney nickel catalyst.
