Abstract

Cashew nut shell liquid and compounds isolated or prepared therefrom by the action of heat are hydrogenated by subjecting them to the action of hydrogen in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst, e.g. 0.5 to 10 per cent of Raney nickel calculated upon the weight of cashew nut shell liquid or the compound isolated or prepared therefrom. The hydrogenation is preferably carried out at 80 DEG to 120 DEG C. and at superatmospheric pressure. In examples: (1) cashew nut shell liquid is hydrogenated at atmospheric pressure at a temperature of 20-50 DEG C., later raised to 70-73 DEG C. to produce tetrahydroanacardol; (2) cardanol (obtained by distilling cashew nut shell liquid with steam) is hydrogenated under pressure at a temperature of 50 DEG C., later raised to 90 DEG C.; (3) cardanol is hydrogenated at atmospheric pressure at a temperature of 25 DEG C., later raised to 60 DEG C. and then to 90 DEG C. The catalyst in each case is a Raney nickel paste in ethanol.
