Abstract

2:5 - Dialkoxytetrahydrofurans are prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of the reaction mixture obtained by reacting furan or a substituted furan of the general formula <FORM:0703929/IV(b)/1> where X and Y may be hydrogen or substituent groups free from olefinic linkages, with bromine or chlorine and a monohydric aliphatic alcohol or alkali metal alcoholate, without isolation of the intermediate 2:5-dialkoxy-2:5-dihydrofuran. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an inorganic basic substance such as sodium carbonate and the reaction mixture is filtered before the hydrogenation to remove undissolved inorganic material. In examples, furan is treated with chlorine in the presence of sodium carbonate and the appropriate alcohol and the reaction mixture is hydrogenated in the presence of Raney nickel to give (1) 2:5-diethoxytetrahydrofuran; (2) 2:5 -dimethoxytetrahydrofuran; (3) 2:5-di-n-propoxytetrahydrofuran and (4) 2:5-di-n-butoxytetrahydrofuran.
