Abstract

Olefins are obtained by dehydrating alcohols in the vaporous state at elevated temperature over a catalyst comprising phosphoric and/or pyrophosphoric acid on a mineral and/or slag containing 5%-80% of silica in free or combined form and also containing alkali metal compounds and/or alkaline earth metal compounds and/or aluminium compounds and possibly impurities. The details of catalyst and process are the same as described in the parent process with reference to the conversion of 1,3-dioxanes to 1,3-diolefins. Tertiary butanol gives isobutylene and 2-methyl-but-1-en-4-ol gives isoprene.
