Abstract

Insulating coating compositions for steel or other magnetic materials are obtained by preparing an aqueous silica sol containing not less than 10 per cent of colloidal silica, adding an aliphatic alcohol to form a gel, then adding water until the gel is dissolved and a second sol obtained. Stirring is preferably maintained during the addition of the water. Specified alcohols are ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl and amyl alcohol and mixtures of these may be used. Other compounds such as alumina, magnesium or aluminium silicate and bentonite may be present in the sol.
