Abstract
PURPOSE: To form the titled filler useful as a thickener or a powder fluidity improver by heating specified silica sol contg. basic aluminum sulfate to form silica alumina hydrogel followed by acid treatment, alkali treatment and dehydration with an org. solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Hydrosol having an SiO2 to Al2O3 wt. ratio of 80:20W92:8 and contg. alumina in the form of basic aluminum sulfate of formula Al2O3.(1.6W0.8) SO3 is heated to form silica alumina hydrogel contg. ≥5wt% solid matter, and the hydrogel is treated with a mineral acid to adjust the wt. ratio of SiO2 to Al2O3 to 86.7:13.3W99.8:0.2. The resulting hydrogel is then adjusted to about 7W11pH by alkali treament and dipped in a water miscible org. solvent such as alcohol or ketone to substitute the solvent for water incorporated in the hydrogel, and the solvent is removed to obtain a silica alumina hydrate filler.
