Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain polycrystalline alumina silica fiber having a low linear contraction coefficient and good restorability with high working efficiency and productivity by converting a dispersion consisting of silica hydrogel, aluminum oxychloride and polyvinyl alcohol into fiber with centrifugal force followed by heat treatment.
CONSTITUTION: A uniform dispersion of water insol. silica hydrogel and aluminum oxychloride with an Al to Cl molar ratio of 1.7W1.9 is blended with polyvinyl alcohol to prepare a fiber-forming dispersion with a pH value of 2W4, a specific gravity of 1.35W1.45, a viscosity of 500W5000 cps and a solid content of 25W35% as oxide. The blending ratio of the silica hydrogel and aluminum oxychloride is 80W95:20W5, pref. 80W85:15W10 by wt. as alumina:silica, and the total amt. of them is regulated to above 96, pref. 98W99%. The dispersion is then converted into fiber with centrifugal force, and the fiber is heat treated at 500W1200°C to obtain polycrystalline alumina silica fiber.
