Abstract

PURPOSE: To perpare porous modidied sepiolite having excellent specific surface area and pore volume, by reacting natural sepiolite with an inorganic or organic acid, thereby increasing the molar ratio of SiO2/ MgO in the sepiolite.
CONSTITUTION: Natural sepiolite is made to react with an inorganic or organic acid to increase the SiO2/MgO molar ratio in the sepiolite to ≥2. A modified sepiolite having further improved qualities can be obtained by combining the above treatment with (i) the process for kneading and conditioning to obtain the ultimate water-content of about 80W350 wt% and/or (ii) the calcining process in an arbitrary order.
