Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture alumina with low sodium content suitable for use as an insulating material, etc. at a low calcining temp. by calcining aluminum hydroxide or alumina in the presence of a siliceous substance and a fluorine-contg. substance.
CONSTITUTION: To sodium-contg. aluminum hydroxide or alumina are added a siliceous substance such as silica sand by about 1W20wt% as SiO2 to the amount of alumina on the basis of dry weight and a fluorine-contg. substance such as aluminum fluoride by ≥about 0.02% as F2, and they are mixed. This mixture is calcined usually at ≥1,000°C, and the calcined alumina is passed through a sieve or the like to separate the siliceous substance. By this method sodium can be removed at such a low calcining temp. by the action of fluorine, and alumina with low sodium content is obtd. industrially.
